Co-creating climate solutions for India's diverse cities
We bring researchers, policymakers, industry, and communities together to address climate challenges no single sector can solve alone
Our Focus Areas
Climate Resilience
Rising heat and water stress are already reshaping life in Indian cities. We work with Indian partners and global experts to co-design approaches that move from short-term coping toward lasting resilience, built on evidence and on local capacity that endures.
Sustainable Infrastructure
Mobility, housing, water, and public space are shaped as much by institutions as by engineering. We convene innovators, researchers, and civil society partners to strengthen the governance that lets infrastructure endure, not as isolated pilots but as lasting urban systems.
Data-Driven Sustainability
Good urban decisions depend on data that is inclusive and trusted by the people it describes. We support the applied research, capacity building, and training that help communities put data and emerging AI tools to accountable use in planning.
What We Do
Established in 2023 in Mumbai with the support of the Tata Trusts, UTIF works on India-led priorities alongside Indian partners, drawing on the University of Toronto's research network and interdisciplinary urban expertise.
We bring universities, governments, entrepreneurs, and communities together to co-create solutions for resilient and equitable Indian cities. Our work runs across two practices.
Research & Education
Through collaborative research projects, conferences, and capacity-building workshops, our R&E programs produce co-created evidence that Indian institutions and governments can use and sustain.
Working alongside founders and partners, our entrepreneurship programs offer mentorship, networks, and the chance to pilot in real cities, so solutions are tested where they are meant to be used.
