Meanwhile, many research projects in India struggle to move beyond pilot phases, even as the country’s urban challenges, from water scarcity to air pollution to climate vulnerability, demand solutions that are simultaneously evidence-based, innovative, and rapidly deployable.
The University of Toronto India Foundation has developed a grant model that not only generates knowledge or launches ventures but also delivers measurable impact by bridging research excellence and entrepreneurial execution. By rethinking how research projects in India are funded, structured, and scaled, this model ensures that research directly addresses practical needs, strengthens local capabilities, and advances solutions that can be implemented and expanded within real-world contexts.
Traditional funding mechanisms often inadvertently limit impact. Research grants reward publication in prestigious journals, valuable for academic careers but often disconnected from policy influence and the on-ground realities of many research projects in India. Startup funding, on the other hand, focuses on financial returns, sometimes at the expense of social or environmental outcomes. Neither model adequately serves the complex, multistakeholder challenges characterizing urban sustainability.
The UofT India Foundation’s grant programs challenge these conventions. Research Catalyst Grants explicitly require collaboration between University of Toronto faculty and Indian partner organizations, ensuring projects combine global expertise with local knowledge. The Techtonic Challenge provides startups not just capital but access to pilot sites with Urban Local Bodies, addressing the deployment barrier that stymies most climate-tech ventures. Student innovation programs at IIT Madras and VIT-TBI combine prototyping grants with mentorship, recognizing that early-stage entrepreneurs need guidance as much as funding.

Consider the 2024-25 cohort of research projects that Indian researchers are conducting with University of Toronto partners. One examines Odisha’s “Drink from Tap” initiative, among India’s rare successes in transitioning from intermittent to continuous water supply. Rather than merely documenting this achievement, the research aims to identify precise, replicable factors, creating a blueprint for other municipalities. The study will produce both academic publications and policy briefs shared directly with state water authorities, ensuring findings reach decision-makers.
Another project investigates assistive mobility devices for differently-abled children, partnering with Amar Seva Sangham. The research combines technical engineering analysis with ethnographic investigation of sociocultural barriers affecting device adoption. Outcomes include not just published findings but a prototype blueprint that will be developed into functional devices and piloted with affected communities. This trajectory from research to tangible product exemplifies the Foundation’s impact orientation.
A third project documents indigenous rice farming practices and seed conservation networks, connecting urban food security with agricultural sustainability. And critically, funding flows directly to Indian partners, strengthening institutional capacity while ensuring research serves local priorities.
The 2025-26 grant cycle, which received twenty-two applications compared to seven the previous year, demonstrates growing recognition of this model’s value. Selected projects will investigate urban water management systems, climate-resilient housing, digital literacy, sustainable mobility, and community-centered urban design. Together, they represent a substantial investment in the research infrastructure India requires for evidence-based urban development.
While research provides evidence for what should be done, startups provide mechanisms for doing it. The importance of startups in India’s sustainability transition cannot be overstated. Established corporations often lack the incentive to disrupt existing systems; government agencies face procurement and bureaucratic constraints. Startups possess the agility, risk tolerance, and innovation capacity necessary for developing and deploying novel solutions at speed.
Yet most promising ventures fail not due to poor technology but the inability to access pilot opportunities, technical mentorship, and patient capital. The UofT India Foundation’s entrepreneurship programs address precisely these barriers.
The Techtonic Challenge, conducted in partnership with Social Alpha, supported eleven startups in its inaugural cohort. What distinguished this program from typical accelerators was the Foundation’s role in facilitating pilot deployments with Urban Local Bodies in Kerala and Maharashtra. This access, extraordinarily challenging for early-stage ventures to secure independently, enabled startups to demonstrate solutions in real urban contexts.
Lambert Water deployed its innovative electrochemical wastewater treatment system in housing colonies, demonstrating a 60% reduction in chemical usage compared to conventional methods. Solinas installed AI-powered water pipeline monitoring with Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, enabling real-time leak detection. Carbon Craft Design implemented carbon-negative building materials across residential, commercial, and institutional sites. RecycleX constructed cement-free concrete roads in partnership with municipalities in Bangalore and Gujarat.
These weren’t merely pilot projects; they generated proof points validating technology performance, user acceptance, and cost-effectiveness. For municipalities, pilots reduced the risk of larger-scale adoption. For startups, they provided crucial reference cases for fundraising and expansion.
Equally important, Techtonic startups received technical mentorship from the University of Toronto faculty. RecycleX worked with a cement chemistry expert to optimize material composition. Three startups received guidance on data architecture from computer science faculty. This combination of deployment support and technical expertise addresses the dual challenges facing climate-tech ventures: market access and technical refinement.
The program also provided capacity-building workshops on impact measurement, intellectual property protection, government procurement processes, and financial management, practical knowledge often lacking among technically oriented founders. One startup founder noted that the IP workshop, followed by individual consultations, proved instrumental in developing their patent strategy.
The Foundation’s partnerships with academic institutions demonstrate a long-term commitment to strengthening India’s innovation ecosystem. The Carbon Zero Challenge with IIT Madras, launched in 2025, received over 1,100 applications from student teams developing low-carbon technologies. Selected teams receive prototyping grants, technical mentorship, and structured pre-incubation support, resources that dramatically increase the likelihood of venture viability.
Similarly, the Student Venture Program with VIT-TBI provides funding and mentorship for student-led startups addressing urban challenges and climate resilience. By supporting ventures at the ideation stage, these programs help talented students transition from academic projects to scalable businesses.
The Eureka! Business Plan Competition at IIT Bombay, where the Foundation supported the Energy & Sustainability track, enabled engagement with over 300 student ventures. The winning team, Trinano Technologies, developing nanotechnology coatings that improve solar panel efficiency, received funding for the design and development of automated coating equipment. More broadly, the Foundation provided detailed feedback to finalist teams, strengthening their business models and increasing likelihood of future success.

The University of Toronto India Foundation’s grant programs demonstrate what such integration can achieve. Research projects generate evidence for which problems to solve and how.
