Sustainable development in India is currently experiencing a major shift. Where previous research primarily involved formal and isolation-focused theories, more recent studies have taken an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and innovative approach to research that has an applied focus. With India continuing to face rapid development while also addressing environmental challenges, new research trends will provide a basis for generating valuable knowledge not only within India but across the world regarding how to develop successful, large-scale strategies to address sustainability challenges.
Historically, research concerning sustainable development has existed in separate disciplinary spaces. Environmental scientists examined ecosystems, economists analyzed growth patterns, and sociologists looked into the dynamics of communities with little to no connections across disciplines. More recently, researchers are beginning to understand that the issues of sustainability are inherently transdisciplinary and require input from multiple perspectives, such as the natural and social sciences, engineering, the humanities, and policy studies. The University of Toronto India Foundation is an example of this type of transdisciplinary research with programs that take a collaborative approach to bring together the best knowledge from several areas of expertise.
